What is Cane?

Cane is made from the outer skin of Rattan - a woody, vine-like plant indigenous to Indonesia and other areas surrounding the South China Sea. Caned furniture became popular with the European upper-class during the Renaissance, and the furniture style was later brought to the Americas. Caned chairs also saw a boom during the industrial revolution because they could be manufactured quickly and cheaply with the advent of pressed cane (sometimes called sheet cane).
